He also conducts the master courses in Ravello of which he is founder.

BRUNO CANINO
  A piano student of Maestros Vitale and Calace, he studied composition with Bruno Bettinelli and graduated from the Conservatory of Milan, where he taught principal piano for 24 years. An active soloist and chamber music member in the main European centers, in Japan, and in the U.S.A., he performs together with such illustrious instrumentalists as Salvatore Accardo, Lynn Harrel, Uto Ughi, Viktoria Mullova, Itzhak Perlman and others. Master of a vast repertoire, as is witness the large number of his recordings, he has dedicated himself particularly to contemporary music. His repertoire is boundless, starting from Renaissance and Baroque music and arriving up to our own times.

The number of prizes with which her prestigious career is studded is truly vast, and includes the "Bellini" in 1965 and the "Lorenzo il Magnifico" in 1990. ANTONIO MENESES

Accomplished teacher, he holds master classes both in Italy and abroad.

EMMANUEL PAHUD
  Born in Geneva, he graduated from the National Music Conservatory of Paris in 1990 and continued his studies with Aurèle Nicolet. He has won numerous prizes in important competitions, including that of Geneva in 1992. At the age of twenty-two, he became first flute in the Berlin Philharmonic directed by Claudio Abbado, after having held the same position in the Munich Philharmonic under Sergiu Celibidache. He holds concerts throughout the world as a soloist, both with full orchestras and in chamber music groups. His recordings with Emi are noteworthy and have been awarded prizes on several occasions.

Following a period of withdrawal and reflection, he dedicated himself to concert activity, soon becoming one of the most renowned pianists in the world and taking part in all the major international music events. His vast recording activity has been rewarded with numerous prizes.
Pollini returns to Siena in the role of instructor after the crowded lessons of last year.

  Born in Avignon, he developed his interest in the harpsichord at the Paris Schola Cantorum, where he won an honorable mention, graduating later from the Conservatory of The Hague. He has dedicated himself to an international career, appearing as soloist and with ensembles such as the Academy of Ancient Music, Musica Antiqua of Cologne and la Petite Bande. His recording of Rameau's Harpsichord Pieces won the Gramophone Award in 1992. In 1991 he formed the ensemble "Les Talens Lyriques", with which he has performed a vast repertoire.

SALVATORE SCIARRINO
  Salvatore Sciarrino has going through a particular reflowering of new works,  recordings, prestigious executions. Born in Palermo in 1947, he began composing in 1959. First public concert, 1962. He leaves his native city for good in 1969. Winner of numerous prizes, between 1978 and 1980 Sciarrino was Artistic Director of the Teatro Comunale of Bologna. He has written masses of literary texts. At times with quite scaled-down means, his music produces direct-contact listening and strong emotionality. For that reason it would be difficult to set his figure in perspective without in some way taking it back to the birth of present-day ecological consciousness: thus his anti-academic open-mindedness towards perceptional mechanisms and towards the complex nature of the real becomes comprehensible.

TRIO DI TRIESTE
  Founded in 1933, this ensemble has carried out its activity without interruption for half a century in all the countries of the world, and has received numerous international prizes and awards. Apart from the years of teaching experience of each of its members, the Trio holds master classes at the Music School of Fiesole and at the International Higher School for Chamber Music in Duino (Trieste).

SHIRLEY VERRETT
  A singer of international prestige, she is highly appreciated in the field of opera for her expertise in interpreting dramatic soprano and mezzo-soprano roles, among which are those of Tosca, Carmen, Lady Macbeth, Amneris, Norma and Cassandra. An interpreter of lieder as well, she has been the guest of the most important opera theatres of the world - from the Bolshoy to the Paris Opéra, from the Scala to Covent Garden - as well as at the major international festivals. In 1990 she began teaching for the first time during the Easter Seminars at the Accademia Chigiana, and she has taught for several years at the music department of the University of Michigan.

LOTHAR ZAGROSEK
  Born in Bavaria, he has a vast experience in numerous European opera houses, such as the Vienna Opera, the Hamburg Opera, the Deutsche Oper of Berlin, the Monnaie of Brussels, etc. He has conducted at the most important festivals, from Salzburg to the Wiener Festwochen, from the Berliner Festwochen to the London Proms.
In addition to his activity as an opera conductor, he has worked together with the most important orchestras, from the Leipzig Gewandhaus to the Munich Philharmonic, from the Montreal Symphony Orchestra to the Berlin Philharmonic.
Since 1997 he has been musical director of the Stuttgart Opera, a theater awarded the title of “Opera House of the Year” in 1998, 1999 and 2000.
His recordings are highly valued, many of them having won awards such as the Edison Prize and the Deutscher Schallplattenpreis.

APPLICATION AND ATTENDANCE

  Students attending the "Accademia Musicale Chigiana", who are divided into Active students and Auditors, are subject to the following regulations:

Active students
  Active students must hold an Italian music diploma or an equivalent foreign certificate (with the exception of Guitar, Singing and Orchestral conducting Courses) and pass an entrance examination at the Chigiana to be taken on the first day of the Course. The application form must reach the Academy with the required documents and the payment of the Application and examination fee by the following dates:

May 15 for the Orchestral Conducting Course;
May 31 for the Composition Course;
June 10 for all the other Courses.

  Active students are not admitted to the same Course for more than four years and are not allowed to attend more than two classes or Seminars simultaneously.

  Age limits for Active students are specified in the paragraph regarding each Course or Seminar. An exception to this limit is foreseen only for groups that can demonstrate they have been together for at least three years.

  Candidates must therefore enclose along with the application form the photocopy of a personal document showing the date of birth. Without this document the enrolment application will be rejected. The age limit is applicable the first year of attendance; it may be waived for three further years, providing they are consecutive to the first one. On the back of the application form candidates shall indicate:

A) the pieces they intend to perform at the entrance examination;
B) the pieces they wish to study during the Course;
C) for the Singing Course: voice range;
for the Chamber Music Course: instrument (in case of groups, family name and instrument of each member);

  Candidates must also be in possession of the scores of all the mentioned pieces.

  Ensemble members are required to be in possession of both scores and parts of all the pieces needed by the group.

  Candidates who do not pass the entrance examination as active students may attend the lessons as Auditors, after fulfilling the necessary formalities at the Secretary's office.

  Active students who - according to the evaluation of the respective instructor and of the Artistic Director of the Academy - excel particularly during the Courses will have the opportunity of being called to the attention of the most important concert institutions in Italy, as well as being inserted in the winter concert season of the Academy.

Auditors

  No particular qualifications are necessary for registration; only the application form is required (there is no deadline for its presentation), together with payment of the auditor's fee in euros.

N.B. Entrance to the Academy is allowed only on presentation of a special ID card, issued by the Secretary's Office, which also allows free entrance to the final concerts of all the Chigiana Courses.

Students must therefore provide a photograph.

Attendance certificates and diplomas
  All Active students who have attended lessons regularly will be granted attendance certificates. Diplomas of Merit or Honour may also be granted.

Entrance tickets for the Academy concerts
  All Academy students (both Active students and Auditors), upon showing their student identification cards, will be admitted free of charge to the Final Class Concerts and will be entitled to price reductions for tickets to other Chigiana concerts. For these concerts, a limited number of complimentary tickets will be available to Active students only. These tickets must be requested and reserved beforehand in the Secretary's office.

N.B. In case of disagreement on the interpretation of translation, the Italian text will be decisive.

FEES

  All fees must be paid in the exact amount requested in Italian currency or in euros. Any exchange expenses or bank commissions will be charged in full to the student.

  Application and examination fee

  This fee must be sent to the Secretary's Office of the Academy together with the application form, indicating on the special form the details of the payment made by postal money order (either from Italy or abroad), on which the student must write his name and the Course for which he is applying. In case of delay, payment for the Course must in any case arrive at least 21 days before the entrance examination for which it is due.

  Otherwise the application will be rejected.

  N.B. Any application and examination fees which have been sent but not used because of the student's absence will be refunded (after detraction of expenses) at the end of the Summer teaching activity, provided a written request is made by the parties concerned. The refund request must reach the Academy not later than November 30th of the year in question.

  Attendance fee for Active students

  This fee must be paid before the beginning of the lessons. It is to be paid in its entirety and cannot be refunded if the candidate stops attendance on his own initiative. In case a scholarship is later awarded, the already paid fee will be refunded in proportion.

  Attendance fee for Auditors

  This fee permits auditing of lessons in the chosen Course, and may be reduced for limited attendance periods. However, it cannot be refunded in case the student interrupts attendance on his own initiative. Those wishing to attend lessons occasionally may purchase one-day tickets.
The sale of entrance tickets is however subject to the capacity of the cassrooms. The direction reserves the right to suspend without notice the sale of tickets in the event that the excessive number of visitors interferes with the lessons or poses a security problem.

Reductions in the Attendance fee for Active students
  The following (non accumulable) reductions are allowed:

60% for attendance of a second Course (*);

45% for members of Ensembles who can demonstrate (by submitting programs of concerts they have given) a concert activity of at least one year;

33% for holders of scholarships expressly awarded by the Italian Government to attend master classes at the "Accademia Chigiana".

Scholarships

  The Accademia Chigiana finances with its own funds - for a total amount of approximately  ? 52.000,00  - a certain number of scholarships for attending Courses. Candidates enrolled as active students may compete by making a written justified request to do so and including it with their application form.   Each instructor will be free to decide the moment of awarding the scholarships: either at the beginning of the Course, on the basis of the results of the entrance examinations, or at the end of the Course, in consideration of the student's merit. No scholarships will be granted to students already benefiting from financial help from other institutions or to those who do not take the entrance examination on the established date.

  Active students may hold only one scholarship, even if they attend two Courses at the same time.

   No scholarships are foreseen for attendance of Seminars.

  The scholarships listed below are financed by public institutions or private donors (for whom they are named) and are awarded at the discretion of the "Accademia Chigiana":

"Carlo Corsini"
(donor "Rotary International", District 2070 and Rotary Foundation)
one scholarship for the sum of ? 2.070,00  reserved for Alain Meunier's 2002 Violoncello Course.

"Emma Contestabile"
scholarships for the amount of ? 20.000,00 (from Mrs Contestabile's bequest in favour of the Accademia Chigiana to be allocated for scholarships for the attendance to the summer masterclasses); scholarships for the amount of  ? 30.000,00 (from Mrs Contestabile's bequest in favour of the Accademia Chigiana to be allocated for extraordinary scholarships).

  Other scholarships

  A scholarship financed with funds of the "Accademia Chigiana" is offered to one of the winners of the International Singing Competition "Francisco Viñas"(on the Jury's recommendation); the amount of this scholarship cannot be higher than that awarded to the active students of the Singing master class.

  A collaboration agreement exists between the Accademia Musicale Chigiana and the Okinawa International Music Festival to foster the exchange of students between the two institutions. The terms of the cooperation will be fixed year by year.

  The Italian government also finances scholarships for attendance of summer master classes at the Accademia Chigiana. For details of requirements and application formalities, candidates should write directly to the Italian Culture Institute or to the Italian Embassy in their own country.

  N.B. Scholarships will be paid at the end of the relative Courses only after communication to the Secretary's Office of the student's tax code (to be given at the moment of the awarding) and after signature of the relative receipt.

  In case of disagreement on the interpretation of translation, the Italian text will apply.
